1. The best time is May-June
This is the peak season for strawberry fruit. The strawberries will taste better and more succulent now. Take advantage of that short time to buy the sweetest strawberries.
2. Pick only ripe fruits
If you grow strawberry indoors, or get the chance to go to the strawberry garden to pick the fruit. Be aware that: strawberries will stop ripe as soon as they leave the tree.
- So, if you are picking fruits, don’t pick ones that are still green.
- Choose fruits that already have a bright red colour.
- Leave green fruits until they are redder and pick them.
- You also need to choose berries and lighter colour will taste better.
3. Choose strawberries with moderate size – Avoid large fruits
The strawberry has an unmistakable pleasant smell. In fact, smaller even berries tend to have a richer and sweeter flavour. Larger pods are usually less fragrant and less sweet.
4. Don’t cut the stem – Only cut when to eat
If you are planning on storing these fruits, do not remove the stalk. This is the most common mistake many people make with strawberries. There is a rumour that you may hear as “strawberries stay fresher longer if you remove the stalk”. However, the right advice from experience strawberry growers is the exact opposite “keep the stalk and cut it only when you’re going to eat strawberries.
5. Immediately remove the moldy fruits
If you see any of the strawberries that have mold on the fruit, remove the berries immediately from the box. That way, you’ll keep the mold from spreading to the rest of the box. If you buy store-bought strawberries, make sure to check the box for moldy strawberries before you buy. If the bottom of the box is stained with yellow, don’t check the box.
6. Keeping Strawberry cold is best
It’s best to keep them in the refrigerator, but even in the refrigerator, the berries are only fresh for up to 3 days. After those 3 days, you should check for any fruit that has white spots or mold. Fruit with pasty patches is a sign of spoilage and should be disposed of in the trash.
Follow the simple steps above so that you will always enjoy the freshest strawberries.
